10 reasons why I will never tell a woman she can’t wear black.
It’s simply not true. If that “rule” has been given to you it is because you are not in the winter color season. If you are not a winter, then it is advised to look for more of a brown/black or charcoal black. Those don’t typically exist when looking for that little cocktail dress. You can buy your little black dress. You can always use jewelry, make up, and accessories. You can always style black.
It’s rude.
It’s more of a conversation. During my color consultations I talk about the color black with my clients. We talk about how black works for them or ways they can use make-up, styling, or their hair to emphasize their beautiful features.
The biggest concern is for hair color and makeup. Black is a cool, high contrast color, so it can wash you out or make you feel pale or harsh. If that is the case then I wouldn’t advise black for your hair color. Nor would I recommend dark black eye make up.
The time of year can matter. If you are a person who gains color from the sun then you will notice that you appreciate black on you more when you gain that color, so the “rule” may not always apply.
Let’s talk about layering. Black is the most available color in layering options. If you are warm toned, consider layering your black pieces with a warm color such as cream, brown, green, etc. If you are more fair toned consider the contrast black would give a color that is more muted or lighter such as a taupe brown, a slate grey, or light blue.
It is typically a sizable portion of everyone’s wardrobe. I do not ever suggest tossing your closet, even if you do have colors that don’t really do it for you. I suggest floating other colors in. So, if you mainly have black in your closet challenge yourself with something in another color other than black. Love the piece and love the color. Repeat that step. You will gain the confidence you deserve.
